Bio: Maison
Charles was founded by Ernest Charles in 1908. He developed an
excellent reputation for creating high quality, elegant reproduction
lighting in antique styles. In 1923, Ernest’s son, Emile takes over
La Maison Charles.
In 1959, Emile’s two
sons, Jean and Jacques joined the family business.
Together, they create the
foundation for Charles’ defining style and expertise, most notably
expressed by their worldwide famous bronze lamp designs that feature
organic designs that are offered by Decodame.con, such as the
Pineapple, Corn Stalk, Pine Cone, Lotus, Wheat with Vase Médicis,
etc...
In 1965 Jacques creates
the Inox Collection. The Organic lamps were particularly successful
and become one the aesthetic references of this period. In 1971, Chrystiane Charles, Jean Charles’ wife, and Valedictorian in
Sculpting at the Ecole Supérieure Nationale des Beaux-Arts (Fine
Arts), takes over the family business and creates her own series,
the Chrystiane Charles Collection.
In 1978, 1981, and 1984 La
Maison Charles receives the Lampe D’Or award for Design (the
highest honor in the lighting industry) at the International
Lighting Trade Show. In 1982 Laurent Charles, architect, joins the
family company and designs his own collection, largely inspired by
his research in the geometrical and graphical characteristics of
light. In 1984 La Maison Charles is invited to join the Colbert
Committee, an association of the most reputable French Art and
Design companies, thus confirming Charles’ enduring reputation as
one of the finest bronze lighting companies. In 1992 Jean Charles
receives a special award at the International Lighting Trade Show
for the modern vision expressed by his 'STOCKHOLM' lamp, designed 40
years previously. In 2001 : Michael Wagner takes over as the CEO of
the company and continues the collection using many of the vintage
designs of Maison Charles' past.
