African Tribal Artifact
Carved Grainery Door with latch
Circa mid 20th Century, Dogoon Tribe, Mali, West Africa

Richly detailed carved grainery
door, with latch.
Carved male and female twin figures symbolizing fertility.
Other generation figures are represented above.
The female figure has the
exaggerated breasts and the male has exaggerated shoulder
blades that the Dogon are known for in their carving.
Mali is an agricultural area,
and the importance of grain is seen the elaborate locking granary door designs.
We are pleased to offer the door with the lock, as many times only locks are
available.
The locks were traditionally given as bridal gifts, with the action of the bolt
through the lock being
symbolic of the act of consummating the marriage.
