Bobo Tribe in the Koudougou region of Burkina Faso
Circa mid 20th Century, West Africa

Colorful geometric carved
animal mask with dyed raffia fiber fringe.
Used by the Bobo tribe in the spring and during planting season,
for agricultural dance rituals, to encourage growth and prosperous plantings.
Generally full costumes were used with masks of this type.
The Bobo people live to the
west of Bwa and carve large zoomorphic helmet masks with painted decoration.
Their work shows elements of Bamana realism as well as the abstract work of the
Mossi.
This Ceremonial Mask is from a
private collection of rare African artifacts in Naples, Fl.
Dimensions: 33” high, 21”
wide, 13” projection.
Condition: In very good
condition.
This has a clear-coat finish on the wood.
