Figural Female Pombibele (Ceremonial Rhythm Pounder)
Senufo Tribe of Liberia and the Ivory Coast
Circa early 20th Century, West Africa

Large sculptural, figural
carved post that was used in rituals /ceremonies to sound out the beat by
pounding the ground. A single strand of beads are worn around her neck. Her hair
is short,
in a cornrow type of style. A sarong style skirt is draped from her waist. Block
style feet, arms at her side.
The Senofo Tribe is known to
make elegant diviner’s figures. Their style of art shows the influence of
Voltaic groups such as the Dogon and Bamana of Mali.
This Pombibele is from a
private collection of African Artifacts in Naples, FL.
Dimensions: 46 ˝” high, 7”
diameter.
Condition: In good original
condition. See holes on backside near bottom of post. No wax or clear-coat.
