Bio:
Ernest D’Hossche was born on April 10th, 1912 to a Flemish father
and a Belgian mother. He was proud of his working-class
background. His career doubled as artist and teacher having ceramics
as the common denominator. He was hired as an apprentice at Boch
Frères and soon came to the attention of Charles Catteau, his
superior in the Creative Workshop. At the beginning of the 1950s,
D’Hossche became artistic adviser at the factory and surrounded
himself with creative talents including Léon Empein. In parallel to
his work as a ceramist, he worked as co-ordinator of practical work
at the School of Decorative Arts in La Louvière and taught some
excellent craftsmen including Max Pourtois, Fernand Joris and
Jeanine Louvet-Laruelle. Ernest D’Hossche’s creative imagination and
his technical expertise are testimony to a very personal artistic
talent and the constant desire to find the balance between form and
decor. Functional objects, unique pieces, vases, cups, figurines,
and decorative panels all have a place in D’Hossche’s work and,
punctuated by sober and harmonious lines, they stand out for their
creativity, engraved or embossed patterns and their tones and
shades. After retiring from his professional activities on 1st
September 1976, he passed away on October 15th of the same year.
