African Art Modernist Sculptural Relief
Circa 20th Century, probably French
Large
highly decorative panel depicting Kalumba, who was known as the
African god who built the road from heaven to earth. Figural dancing women and children
playing musical instruments in a very stylized Modernistic style, reminiscent of
the artwork inspired by Josephine Baker during the 1920’s.
Made
of a copper type of metal that has a rich patina finish with shades of copper
and bronze. Wonderful in a Contemporary or Art Deco décor.

Bobo tribe in the spring and during planting season, for agricultural dance
rituals, to encourage growth and prosperous plantings. Generally full costumes
were used with masks of this type.
