Carl Auböck
( 1900-1957) Biography:
Austrian designer perhaps known best for his sliced tree trunk tables. He
also designed flatware, lamps and other furnishings, including an interesting
safari chair.
The Weiner Werkstätte Carl Auböck was founded in the 19th century among many
other workshops in the 7th district of Vienna specializing in bronze-casting.
Carl Auböck (1900 -1957) was one of the very few Viennese students attending
the Bauhaus in Weimar in the twenties after World War I. When he returned he
reorganized the Werkstätte (workshop) he continued the line in the spirit of
his Bauhaus experiences. His son Carl Auböck (1924 -1993)
and his grandson -also- Carl Auböck (born 1954) carried on with the
development of the Werkstätte which today remains as the last one in its own
tradition.
