Biography:
Karl Friedrich Schinkel ( 1781-1841)
Considered to be the most influential German master builder of the
early 19th Century,
Schinkel was also an artist, city planner and a famous furniture
designer.
His theory was that new designs should draw on the ancient world for
inspiration,
rather than slavishly recreate it. His publication ‘ Vorbilder fur
Fabrikanten und Handwerker’ (Role models for Makers and Craftsmen)
in 1835 had a widespread influence. In Schinkel’s later years, his
design drew less from the Neoclassical style and more on the
Renaissance.
