French Art Deco /
Art Moderne Complete Dining Suite
by Maxime Old, book documented
Circa early 1940's, France

Rare, complete dining suite by noted
furniture designer, Maxime Old.
Elegant and simple classic design, able to blend in almost any style
of decor.

This beautiful solid Mahogany Suite
includes: a large sideboard, a small server / buffet / bar cabinet
with glass display, rectangular dining table with original leaves
and 6 matching dining chairs, with the original velvet upholstery.
Original black and white marble tops
and solid bronze feet, decorative trim and hardware. Key locking
cabinets.
Ideal for the purist, this set is all original and in excellent
condition.

The recently published Maxime Old
coffee table book and article in Architectural Digest have begun a
new appreciation for this (previously under valued) designer.
The simple and classic design
features solid carved mahogany in linear designs that are repeated
or remembered in some form on each piece. The use of bronze in a
squared off linear or block design
is also used on each piece to tie the designs together visually.
Please see the biography at the
bottom of this Dining Suite description for more information on
Maxime Old.

The base of the dining table has a
fluted linear design on the legs, with squared block bronze trim and
feet.
The original solid mahogany extension leaves are included.

The set of six dining chairs each
have a linear raised design
on the area of the chair below the
inside back cushion, just above the seats.
The chair frame and legs
have a Modernist angular design and are very sculptural.
The original neutral brown velvet upholstery is intact, clean and
free of damage.
It shows very little wear and can be kept or
replaced to suit your decor.

The large sideboard / credenza
feature a 3 door raised panel design, in a squared concentric
pattern,
finished with a bronze square plaque in the center of each door.
Doors also feature a bronze trim framing the concentric raised panel
design.
Square block bronze feet and squared linear bronze trim remember the
base of the smaller buffet and dining table.
The interior of the sideboard offers ample storage with 5 adjustable
shelves and a single drawer for flatware.
The original black and white marble top is intact. If you have a
small dining room and do not have
room for this piece, you may wish to consider using this piece in a
living room, under a large flat screen TV,
as it is ideal to place audio/ video equipment in. All three doors
are key locking.
This design is documented in the
Maxime Old book, see details below.
The small server - buffet / bar
cabinet has the same overall design of the larger sideboard,
but with a right side clear glass door, to display china, glassware
or barware.
It may also be used as a bar or
dessert cabinet. It shares the same bronze details as
the sideboard and table base. The black marble top (with white
veins) is original and likely from the same slab as the marble top
on the larger sideboard. Both sides are key locking.

Bio:
Maxime Old (1910-1991) was born on December 13, 1910 in
Maisons-Alfort. He was the son and nephew of cabinetmakers,
therefore creating his own designs in wood seemed a
natural ability.
A former pupil
of the Boulle School and an apprentice of Master Jacque
Emile Jacques Ruhlmann, Maxime passionately conceived his
designs in wood as sculpture, keeping them free of
elaborate decoration.
Following
Ruhlmann's example, he understood the importance of
functionalism and the task of concealing itself in the
purity of forms and delicacy of styling. He created a
variety of furniture pieces in a progression of styles
throughout his life, until he passed away in 1991.
The sideboard
design from this suite is pictured on page 87 of the
